Beneficial Floodplain Functions

Floodplains in their natural state can increase a community's overall quality of life, something that is often not recognized. Floodplains without major development may also provide space for passive and active recreational uses. These green areas can also improve the property values of surrounding areas. Floodplains can transform problem areas into value-added assets.

Floodplain areas also maintain breeding and feeding grounds for wildlife and can provide areas for cultivation of fish and shellfish. Floodplains also enhance biological productivity by supporting a high rate of plant growth. This helps to maintain biodiversity and the integrity of ecosystems. Additionally, floodplains can assist in reducing flood velocities and the potential for flood erosion by having more stable soils
